Programme Notes

Joseph Travers (b 1983)

Two Dances

Ifor Thomas (b 1982)

Danse de Triomphe

Before the film music, we are glad to present two pieces of music by young Wimbledon composers, Joe Travers and Ifor Thomas, offered as tributes to Sir Malcolm. Ifor Thomas, who is now in his first year at Swansea University studying Ancient History and Classics, describes his one-movement Danse de Triomphe, for small orchestra, as a short piece in tragic mood which nevertheless expresses the will to overcome misfortune. Ifor Thomas started writing music some three years ago, and this will be the first performance of the Danse de Triomphe.

Joseph Travers' Two Dances, also for small orchestra, consists of two contrasting movements, the first neo-classical in style, the second using strong, stressful rhythms. The dances are based on elements of folk music. Joseph Travers is now reading music at York University. Both he and his friend Ifor Thomas were at Wimbledon College.
