”Strident, shocking, imperious and beautiful, this was a riveting performance”was how Anna Picard described Ruth’s Wigmore Hall debut in the Independent on Sunday.
Violinist Ruth Palmer brings glamour and engagement to the concert stage and is fast developing an international reputation for her intense physical performances, deeply sonorous sound and championing of new music.
Ruth’s debut CD with the Philharmonia Orchestra was recently released to huge critical acclaim worldwide and the Philharmonia Orchestra subsequently invited Ruth to tour the Prokofiev Concerto with them. “Palmer’s bow has a demonic edge and her tone is so sweatily intense that one cannot turn away” wrote Rick Jones in The Times and International Record Review said “If I hear a greater record of Shostakovich’s music this year, I shall be astonished.” An opinion echoed by Andrew Clements in the Guardian and Classic FM magazine who made it January CD of the month. In March 2007 Ruth was nominated for a Classical Brit Award in the Young British Classical Artist category.
This season’s concerts include a third Wigmore Hall recital on 14th May, Mozart Concerto No.2 with the Ulster Orchestra which will be recorded for broadcast on BBC R3, a recital at the Chichester Festival and performances of the Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Elgar concertos. In 2006 Ruth’s concerts included Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the English Chamber Orchestra. She performed in St Petersburg for a BBC Radio 4 documentary to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich’s birth and gave recitals in Italy for the Discovery Channel and in Taiwan at the Chi Mei Culture Foundation performing on Mischa Elman’s 1722 Stradivari.
